FRIDAY BOOK SHARING!
What are you reading today?
Ida B is a girl with a plan. Right away, the title Ida B…and her Plans to Maximize Fun, Avoid Disaster, and (Possibly) Save the World will tell the reader that this spirited, adventurous girl is full of fun, fun, fun. Kate DiCamillo’s quote (on the cover of the edition I read) “I feel a deep gratitude that Ida B exists” sums up how I felt while reading Ida B’s story. Because this little girl brings so much to the reader, who will be enthralled and captivated by the Voice. And since Ida B likes to use capital letters and Fabulously Creative and Ingenious Vocabulary (phrases such as Sacrificial Pit of Never-Ending Agony and Statue of Surprise, the Venus of Dismay come to mind) I am going to follow in Ida B’s Surprising and Creative Footsteps.
Ida B has a Glorious and Fun Filled Life as a young girl with an apple orchard surrounding her home and with a homeschooling life, she is free to explore the outdoors at her leisure. But change comes to her life when her mother is diagnosed with cancer and Ida B’s life turns Upside Down, with a regular school program and the possibility of new neighbors in her beloved orchard. Here’s what I love about Ida B: she is authentic, heart felt and emotional. We see the changes she undergoes and her growth as an individual. She is strong, resilient, and she learns from her mistakes (yes, she makes mistakes, and some of them are big – there are times when I wanted to jump into the book and say no, no Ida B, don’t do this!). One of the strengths of the story is that she DOES make mistakes and she DOES learn that she cannot have everything she wants in life. She has to own up to her mistakes. And she learns the importance of kindness and respect. A Highly Recommended Adventurous and Fantastically Fun Read!
